Coastal and Bay protection
So how do they protect the coast from the rising sea levels and unpredictable weather conditions.
San Francisco ran a competition so they could get people involved to bring ideas to the table, this was called "International Rising Tides". The idea was to try to gauge what practical measures groups or people would bring forward. Most of all they wanted to raise the awareness of the general public so that everybody could make a difference. It is very difficult to have just one idea it needs to be wide ranging and diverse. The ideas need to be able to be added to and they need to work.
The competition brought out areas that people could focus and build upon and feel that the general population could have an impact on form an input point.

There are many risks involved, however it
can be broken down into 7 areas, which are in no particular order.
1. Population. (Which must be the protected at all cost). The need for mitigation strategies that has minimum building height above sea level controls, for the housing of the people. 2. Healthcare and Emergency facilities, that can still offer services without fear of inundation of water. 3. Property and types at risk
4. Wetlands and marsh area need to be protected form salt water levels so they don't become brackish and salt laden. 5. Major infrastructure
6. Wastewater and treatment plants are protected so the management systems aren't seeping back in to the water systems. 7. Tips, refuse sites and hazardous waste and material sites must be protected as the leaching of the toxins would affect drinking supplies. |
