- Constant Update of Plan
Since 2007, the 2007 Executive Order on Climate action makes Boston a pioneer on climate action. In 2011, to ensure Boston’s leadership in climate action around the globe. Under administration of the Major of Boston, Thomas M. Menino, an updated version called A Climate of Progress – City of Boston Climate Action Plan Update was released. Bear in mind the lesson learnt from unimaginable damage of New York and New Jersey due to Hurricane Sandy, the Greenovate Boston Community Summit is dedicated to do everything possible to minimise impacts of climate change. With support from the new Major, Martin J. Walsh, the latest version of climate action was launched in 2014, called the Greenovate Boston 2014 Climate Action Plan Update.
As the City of Sydney has already set targets on reducing carbon emissions, it is recommended that Sydney to break down several stage goals and update the action plan regularly to ensure a flexible and robust plan for unknown future conditions.
- Supplementing Policies that catalyse the reduction of greenhouse gas emission
Surcharges, retrofits and public education are examples of essential strategies that Boston has implemented while focusing on reducing greenhouse gas emission.
- Create new standards and building code for future development
Ensure all new development are built to be resilient to sea level rise minimise future effort for upgrade or improvement.
- Protect existing building structure
Vulnerability of existing built form needs to be assessed and specific protection policies can be applied to minimise loss and impact.
- Innovative thinking for climate adaptation and mitigations
Urban planners should be encouraged to think outside of the box to revolve the traditional adaptation and mitigation strategies.
