Did you know?
- Rising sea level can cause serious damage not only through coastal inundation, but also extreme weather condition, such as astronomical tides, storm surge flooding and hurricanes. The damage on infrastructure and stock property can then cause huge economical loss.
- Small islands are particularly at risks because of their lack of adaption and mitigation strategies and reliable demographic and socio-economic structures. Bates suggests that in 2100, many islands and low-lying coastal areas can potentially become not liveable anymore. (IPCC 200, Bates et al. 2008)
- Forced migration is likely to occur due to serious flooding events. Loss of homes, infrastructures and community would cause huge economical loss. Large financial support is also needed to build new homes and new communities to accommodate these victims. The following diagram illustrate few large migrations occurring due to sea level rise (Reuveny 2005).
