Will these strategies work
The strategies that are being implemented to the San Francisco region may not be totally suitable to the city of Sydney. The one big difference is the depth our harbour. The strategies for levee's to protect the San Francisco Bay area are possible because of the depth of the harbour. Sydney's Harbour is naturally deep.
The first and most important part to the sea level rising strategy is to change the zonings in areas that will be affected by the sea rise. Sea level risk assessments will need to be required when planning any shoreline projects. Any projects that are that are taken on must be designed to cope with any sea level rises predicted over the coming 50+ years. Designs for shoreline protection such as the raising of the existing sea walls or adaption of park lands to be able to cope with increased levels.
There needs to be an effort of all councils to be on the same page in the approach of protection. Unnecessary wastage of money and resources will only set programs in the future behind before they start. It is necessary to monitor the effectiveness of cities that are affected the way that Sydney will be. We cant be afraid to ask questions or for help. We need to be global on this issue and keep our eyes wide open.
