Key Lessons Learned
The Fours P's of Sustainability
Profit- Economic SustainabilitySaving the city of Mokpo through it's adaptation planning is ultimately about maintaining the cities economic viability as a commercial centre , trade port and tourist destination. But the balance of Cost v's Development needs to be constantly assessed. All redevelopment can be achieved at unlimited expense to the community. If the economic returns are not substantiated buy the costs outlayed then the effectiveness of the planning strategies need to be re adapted to meet the needs of both the cities protection from the sea and Mokpo's function as a sustainable city.
People-The social ImpactFor Mokpo to apply their adaptation planning strategies to their city ,strong consideration should be given to the social impact that the people of the community will undergo. Whilst the emphasis is on providing a connected, green city, with upgraded infrastructure facilities, many people will be displaced due to the relocating of residential areas to lower risk areas. People do not always adapt well to change . Public consultation and education is essential in ensuring the support of the people who will be effected the most.

Planet- Environmental ImpactWhilst Mokpo has been changing it's environmental footprint for the last 100 years, this has not always been for the environmental enhancement of the area. Consideration must be given to the impact the changes will have on nature and how a balance can be achieved for the sustainability of all. The bird life of the area and marine life of the coastal waters need to be protected so that the ecological life cycles can be maintained .
New vegetation projects and wetland parks should not only be used as protection from the sea and drainage systems, but as carbon footprint neutralizers so the city can promote green urban sustainability . Proactive- Action v's Non actionMokpo’s planning strategists have put Considerable research and development into proactively designing adaptation measures to ensure the well being of it’s city into the future. These will need to be constantly reviewed. Nature does not always react as predicted and cost of the redevelopments sustainability as opposed to retreat is always a contentious issue.
